In my practice, quite often I had to adjust the line spacing in Word when editing various documents. In Microsoft Word, there are already several convenient blanks on this subject. However, you can move a little away from the standards and customize everything as you see fit.
Adjusting the line spacing in Word is a less used functionality. I would even say rarely used. When they encounter a document with a double line spacing, not knowing how to get everything back to normal is discouraging for some users!
When forming serious documents, it is a little more difficult than a school essay. Using a different interval between lines or paragraphs is better to focus the reader’s attention on a certain part of the document.
Line spacing in Word (or all have forgotten about the paragraph). What is the spacing between lines and paragraphs? The line spacing in Word is the distance between two lines of text. The spacing between paragraphs is the gap between two paragraphs. As well as the correct use of literate fonts, spacing is an integral part of document formation (although most of the standard settings are sufficient).
No matter how strange it may sound … paragraph parameters use the line spacing as well as the distance between paragraphs .
In Word, the default line spacing is measured in the multiplier of the size of the selected font in this paragraph. What does it mean? – For example, I used to write notes 12 font. If you select a single interval, the distance between the lines will be 12 pixels. If you select double, then 12 * 2 = 24 pixels between the lines. However, using the exact settings you can select the line spacing forcibly in pixels. Paragraphs are a little different. By default, the Word will add eight pixels after the paragraph (It’s important to add intervals after the paragraph, before the paragraph there are none). We can change these parameters as you please!
How to adjust the line spacing in Word using presets
In the text editor Word there are already embedded parameters of intervals. I want to remind that, in Word, apply the line spacing parameters at the paragraph level. If you mark a place in a certain paragraph with the cursor, you will set the distance between the lines in this paragraph.
Select the necessary paragraphs and on the Home tab, find the Interval button.
A drop-down menu opens with the line spacing options (top) and the distance between paragraphs (bottom).
As I already wrote a little earlier – the multiplier of your font determines the distance between the lines… i.e. choosing a factor of 3.0 – we get the distance SIZE x 3 . You can experiment, but as a rule the documents use single or one and a half line spacing.
Spacing between Paragraphs
With the distance between paragraphs, the situation is a bit strange – as for me there is little logic here … we can only add an interval before, or remove after. Please note that menu items vary depending on the presence or lack of spacing between paragraphs.
It is clear that messing with each paragraph is rather monotonous and not rational. Applying parameters to the entire document is easy! Select the entire document (CTRL + A) and use all the commands I mentioned above …
Using spacing styles for the entire document
Move to the tab “Design” and click on the button “Interval between paragraphs.”
Despite the name of the item “Interval between paragraphs”, the changes also apply to the distance between the lines. Hover on the menu item that interests us. You will see a tool tip with the spacing parameters and the distance between lines and paragraphs.
These styles apply to the entire document and selectively correct it does not work. In the screenshot below, for clarity, you can see how compressed, open and double style intervals look.
Custom Spacing for Paragraphs
At the end of the list there is an item “Custom spacing for paragraphs …” – here, in the “Manage styles” window, we can adjust the parameters for ourselves.
On the “Default” tab in the “Interval” category, you can configure the parameters of the distances between the lines as accurately as possible. Please note that the parameters can be applied either to a specific document being edited or to all subsequent ones!

Set the fine-tuning of the line spacing in Word
If you want more precise settings than the methods described above, then there remains one more option (who is the main one after all!). Select the necessary paragraphs to edit (or select the entire document with the CTRL + A key combination). On the Home tab click on the hidden Paragraph Settings button.
The “Paragraph” window will open. On the “Indents and Spacing” tab in the “Interval” section, you can make corrections of all distances both between paragraphs and between lines.
Parameters for paragraphs are to the left, everything about the line spacing is to the right. Everything is simple and disgraceful. Adjust the distance as you like.
