The Porsche and BMW installed a DC charger station ultra-fast electric car in Jettingen-Scheppach, Germany. They are able to charge batteries at a power of 450 kW. This means they are three to nine times faster than the existing chargers.
In the tests carried out, the companies managed to obtain, on average, enough load for a range of 100 km in just 3 minutes. In the case of Porsche, the battery of its 90 kWh test vehicle was charged at a rate above 400 kW. The BMW test car, with a battery of 57 kWh, reached 80% capacity in 15 minutes.
The faster loaders tend to overheat. So, the companies have taken steps to keep station operation within safe temperature margins. For that purpose, they use a special cooling system that maintains the flow of coolant without risk of interruption.
The fast charging station is now running at no cost to drivers. The system adapts to different battery capacities. This allows all electric cars to use the same charging infrastructure. The power of 450 kW can be used in 400 V and 800 V batteries.
Today, two of the biggest disadvantages for those who want to buy an electric car is the delay to fully recharge the battery for one. The other one is the low autonomy provided in short charges. The solution presented with this partnership between BMW and Porsche may change the habit of consumers. This could make them rethink about the purchase.
Neither company has revealed when it intends to install other stations like this in other locations in or outside Germany.
