Jigsaw, an Alphabet incubator, has developed an extension for Google Chrome that promises to moderate comments on the internet on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Disqus. Named Tune , the tool aims to make the online experience more enjoyable. To do this, it allows the user to set viewing levels for comments. It ranges from filtering certain types of words or phrases to completely blocking those views.
Perspective
Tune uses machine learning to detect the possibility of a comment being toxic or not. In this case, the technology employed is called “Perspective”. It is an API created by Jigsaw itself in 2017 to combat aggression and harassment online. It has been used as a moderation medium by sites such as The New York Times, The Guardian, The Economist and Wikipedia.

The extension is still in trial phase. So it may present some flaws when displaying some comments. For example, it can hide what is not considered offensive by the user and show something set to normal.
Using Tune is very easy, just turn the circle selector that appears just when you click on the tool. However, we were only able to see it in action by turning on the hide all options – which hides all comments – as seen on Facebook on the left and YouTube on the right. This is because the extension has been programmed to detect only English comments.
According to the creators of Tune, it should not be seen as a definitive solution to harassment or online attacks. It’s “an experience that can show people how machine learning technology can create new ways to protect them while reading online discussions,” said the extension’s description. There is no information yet if it will be available in other languages. Are you curious? Then click here to download Tune!
