Next year we are waiting for a whole scattering of cool games and exclusives. But this year there will be more interesting releases.
This fall, the developers have pleased us with a decent amount of interesting projects. Why are only Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Battlefield V, Spiderman and Red Dead Redemption 2. Already these games you have enough to pass the New Year holidays in front of the screen of the monitor or TV. However, the autumn is over, and blockbusters are gone along with it – the major developers have already shown the most interesting things, now it’s a matter of simpler franchises. It cannot be said that December turned out to be quite boring, but such a Starfall, as in October or November, is no longer observed.
The brightest novelty of the first month of winter, of course, is Just Cause 4. The developers have added even more madness, cool vehicles and an open world, where everyone will find their adventures on the fifth point. In addition, fans of tactical games are waiting for just two cool stories, each of which is able to captivate for many hours. And if you didn’t have enough multiplayer shooters this fall, then you shouldn’t get depressed – this year there will be another cool project where you can shoot at your enemies, enjoy realistic physics and even tactical subtleties of war. I think you will have the opportunity to spend some savings on the games before the New Year.
Just Cause 4 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
The developers of Just Cause 4 decided not to change anything drastically in the new part of their franchise. They already have a successful formula for attracting fans from all over the world, so why invent something? Rico Rodriguez again goes on an adventure and will fight with whole hordes of enemies armed to the teeth, who for some reason decided to resist him. The storyline does not pull on high drama, but this is not necessary here. Players love Just Cause for the absolutely incredible gameplay that no one else has on the market. And in the new part, we are promised only to improve what was almost perfect.
A key innovation of the project was the dynamic weather. Now on the island of Solis often there are hurricanes and other weather disasters that significantly change your feelings from the virtual battles. A huge open world with a mass of activities allows you to plunge into the most interesting adventure and no longer emerge to the next part. It’s not to say that a modern gamer can be surprised by an open world or large map sizes, but the authors of Just Cause 4 did their best to make your jaw drop. Travelling around the island will bring as much pleasure as war.
Fascinating movements on the map are also made by a variety of vehicles, which in this franchise often ignore the laws of physics. Here the character moves with the help of his hook over enormous distances, the machines take off into the air at a decent height and land back safely, and the aeroplanes do require special attention. The player is provided with so many high-speed vehicles that you don’t even want to open the card. Why, if you can stoke the gas pedal to the floor and look out ahead for another opportunity to get adrenaline rush?
The Just Cause series has recently been actively compared with GTA Online. There, the developers turned a more or less realistic shooter into something not entirely clear, with grenade launchers, jet planes and high-speed cars. That’s only if in GTA this is something unusual that goes beyond the standards, then for Just Cause 4, this is the norm. Here, gamers are always pushed to rash acts, to war against whole armies, and explosions happen here more often than death in Bloodborne. Tired of challenging games with tricky storylines, where you need to think a lot with your head and train your reaction? Just Cause 4 is already waiting for you.
Just Cause 4 comes out on December 4th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
Let’s be honest – now tactical games are not in great demand among gamers. Everyone wants to go in, shoot, run around the virtual world, enjoy beautiful graphics and take a break from the harsh reality. Players are not very eager to sit and create complex strategies. Of course, there is a separate audience of fans who love to do this and they get unreal pleasure from turn-based battles, but this is not such a big army of gamers. Nevertheless, some developers want to create in this genre and do something that may surprise you to the depths of the soul. A striking example is the Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.
The creators of the project decided to show the virtual world from another side. Our characters (girl, boar and duck) are not superheroes, they have the most ordinary weapons and they easily die if you think a little with your head during the battle. The player is forced to memorize all the details, to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the heroes and their opponents, in order to then win without much loss. And there is something to remember here – each hero has a lot of interesting active and passive skills, plus unique mutations. All this will allow you to create an army of dreams and defeat any opponent.
Developers put great emphasis on combat tactics, positioning, ambushes and the study of enemy behaviour. The player will need to observe how the enemy behaves during the patrol, how they move around the location and where they can be taken by surprise. Then you can arrange a cunning ambush and win thanks to the surprise effect, or use the unique skills of the members of your squad. The variability of the combat system makes it possible every time to surprise the enemies, and indeed yourself. During the fight itself, there is also something to think about – what skills to use, in what order and so on.
Very stylish looks graphics Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. Not to say that the designers set themselves the goal to surprise a potential buyer with photorealism, but something in the picture is clearly catchy. It remains only to understand the storyline, which so far is represented only in passing, and deal with the skills of their fighters. A boar, for example, can play the role of a tank and attack enemies at close range while the duck comes in the back for critical damage. All this looks extremely fascinating, and in what other game will you have hardly warriors, consisting of a boar and drake?
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is released on December 4th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Jagged Alliance: Rage! (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
The original step-by-step role-playing game Jagged Alliance enjoyed unheard of popularity among gamers – an interesting story, new mechanics and decent graphics for its time did their job. However, for some inexplicable reasons, the project could not boast of financial success. Soon, the author of the series began to have problems with Sir-Tech Software, and in 2001 the publisher and developer ceased to exist. Franchise rights were resold a number of times, due to which a whole scattering of rather mediocre games under the name Jagged Alliance came out. For this reason, gamers have perceived the novelty pretty cool.
It should be understood that any projects that focus on tactical actions are only interested in a small proportion of the gaming community. These are casual shooters and royal battles can collect millions of users in front of monitors, but a much smaller number of players want to think about each next step. So the publisher in the face of THQ Nordic was faced with a rather difficult task – to revive a long-forgotten series, the genre of which is currently not very popular. Fortunately, the developers had interesting ideas and enough experience to implement them.
Initially, fans thought the new part would get number 3, but the publisher decided to hold off and name the product Jagged Alliance: Rage !, leaving itself room for manoeuvre. In the new game, the developers decided to focus on the unique skills of the characters, on their character, background and weaknesses. The move turned out to be incredibly successful – gamers who have already been given a chance to play the new part are in indescribable delight at the elaboration of the characters and the storyline. And the features of the characters are not just spelt out by the text, but also affect the gameplay.
In addition, clearly THQ Nordic invested in graphics. This is not to say that the picture looks photorealistic here, but it should not. The Jagged Alliance franchise always looked original, and with a serious budget, it was possible to turn just a good game into a really excellent one. The locations are lively and interesting, there is something to explore and where to set up an ambush, the attention to detail is impressive. Let’s hope that the developers managed to revive the series at the proper level and the ardent fans of the original will have something to play this winter. The publisher already has a decent arsenal of good releases, so there are plenty of chances for success.
Jagged Alliance: Rage! coming out December 6th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Insurgency: Sandstorm (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
Most modern developers do not even look towards realistic shooters. It is rather difficult, even with a large budget, to realize a really good shooter, where there will be no arcade, and physics and tactics will satisfy the requests of fans. If you look at Call of Duty or Battlefield, you will notice that developers in many aspects deviate from realism. This is done in order to attract a large audience of gamers and make more money. The creators of Insurgency: Sandstorm decided not to make concessions to casual players and presented a very complex shooter.
In this game, you will not run headlong around the map and execute everyone and everything just because of a good reaction. Insurgency: Sandstorm requires you to think through tactics, accuracy in the study of locations, knowledge of the map and the ability to cooperate with the team. For example, the game has an SUV with an armoured machine gun in the rear, which can cause a ton of pain and suffering to the opposing team. You will be able to agree with a teammate on joint management and you can safely fight with a decent advantage. Or call a friend, then it will be even more interesting to fight.
The cards here are quite spacious, you will not stumble upon your opponent every thirty seconds. This allows you to ambush, move around the locations and shoot those who played enough in Call of Duty and runs in open areas without cover. Gradually, when you try more machine guns and get used to getting hit by a sniper rifle, the game will take on a completely different meaning. This is the shooter that provides tactical manoeuvres and realism but does not turn into a dull shooter where everyone sits in the bushes and waits. Insurgency: Sandstorm’s action is great too.
The problem of the shooter is the only optimization. On the whole, during the beta test absolutely everything the gaming community noticed that there are incredibly many difficulties with the technical component of the game. Sometimes FPS sags for no particular reason, the quality settings of the graphics have almost no effect on the FPS, sometimes there are friezes and poor hit registration. We really hope that this is a beta problem, and by the time of release, all these shortcomings will be corrected and the product will look like candy. If the developers succeed, you can safely call Insurgency: Sandstorm one of the best shooters of the year.
Insurgency: Sandstorm is released on December 12th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon (PS4)
Game projects from major Japanese developers always have their own atmosphere. Sometimes it seems that while Western studios are sweating their games on new platforms and building incredible mechanics, in Japan the game creators are in a vacuum and they are not at all concerned with modern fashion. They can easily release remasters of cult games with a minimal set of changes, run games with a plot for three to four hours, but not lose the loyalty of the audience and financial well-being. A prime example of this is Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (Yakuza 6).
The authors of the project will allow you to manage a seasoned detective who decided to fight against violators of the law. Fortunately, there are plenty of gangsters of various levels of scale in the Kamurocho area, we will have a lot of work to do. Game mechanics sharpened by shadowing the characters, after which you will need to fight and defeat impudent people in an unequal battle. It’s safe to say that this is the gameplay of the new product from the Japanese studio. Many will now say that this is extremely small for a major release in 2018. However, you and I think a little differently than the gamers of Asia, who are lacking in this.
Of course, the writers promise us a dizzying plot with lots of interesting twists and turns. All this will be tied to large gangsters, leaders of some gangs and other interesting personalities. The developers have paid a lot of attention to the storyline, so fans of exciting dialogues and easy narration will have something to do. Although, of course, I would not expect from Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon the level of drama of the third Witcher. The history here is more rectilinear, it was stuffed to capacity with pathos speeches and local phrases. For fans of Yakuza, this is already the usual rhythm of research of the plot, the rest of the gamers will be a little unusual.
It is worth noting that the network already has records of gameplay demos. There you can note a rather long cut-scene with an elegant production. In this regard, the Japanese have always stood out – they may not blow up the brain with a complex plot, but perfectly present what they have. And, of course, the game will delight you with cool fights with lots of effects, tricks and combinations. The combat mechanics are well developed, it more than covers all the flaws that are present here. Not the biggest release of this year, but fans of Japanese motifs will definitely like the novelty.
Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon comes out on December 13th on PS4.
