WhatsApp is the social network most used by users to communicate with each other. That is why we are going to show you how to recover lost photos and videos in your account.
The WhatsApp application installed on our smartphones, whether iPhone or Android, offers the possibility of making backup copies to store the messages, photos and videos that you usually receive or exchange with your family and friends.
The social network carries out a backup in order that, at a given time, you can restore them. The storage is carried out in Google Drive. And it is interesting to have this function activated to be able to recover it at any time.
How can I activate the backup on my phone?
Below, we show you step by step the way to proceed:
- Open the WhatsApp application on your mobile phone.
- Click on the three points to access ‘Settings’.
- In ‘Settings’ click on the ‘Chats’ option.
- You can check the date and size of the last copy made by the app.
- Click on ‘Google Drive Settings’ and set the period with which you want the backup to take place: never, when you play, daily, weekly or monthly.
- As a last option, you will see the ‘Include videos’ box. Check the option if it is what you want.
What happens if you do not have the backup function activated?
All the files that we exchange for WhatsApp, including photos, videos, audios, voice messages, documents and others, are stored in a local folder of the mobile phone. This is fixed by default after installing the application on the mobile.
In this way, unless you have deactivated an action for fear of running out of storage space, all your photos and videos will be stored in your phone’s memory.
Using a program that allows you to navigate through the folders of your Android phone (if you do not have it, try downloading Es File Explorer from Google Play), access the location that we indicate: ‘Local> WhatsApp> Media’. Browse based on the name or date of the photo or video until you find it.
If you happen to own an iPhone with the latest version of iOS 12, it turns out that you have a file manager under the name of ‘Files’. Click on its icon and navigate to locate the content you are looking for WhastApp.

Recover photos and videos from WhatsApp servers
The social network announced last year the functionality of keeping backup copies on its own servers of all the multimedia files we received during a period of 3 months.
In this way, if the video or image accidentally deleted in your device has a period less than this period, we can recover it directly without problems. For this, it is essential that you have not deleted the chat where you received the photo or video.
If we comply with the conditions set by WhatsApp, we will be shown a small thumbnail with the unfocused image of the original file, with the possibility of clicking on a download icon.
Click on it and you can download the image again because the shipment has not been deleted.
What happens if more than 3 months have passed?
In the case that you have an Android phone, the solution is to use recovery programs, such as Restore Image. If you have deleted your WhatsApp photos and wish to recover them, try installing the free application available on Google Play.
Many of these programs require that additional conditions be met, such as the fact that your device is in ‘root’ mode of operation. In the case of Restore Image, it will not be necessary to grant these permissions.
The application allows you to recover files from a selected folder. Whether it is in the device memory or an additional microSD memory card. Mark the folder you want to scan and the application will show you what was found. Then click on ‘Restore’.
Can I use my PC or Mac to recover photos from WhatsApp?
If it turns out that none of the above methods has taken effect, you can try another additional option. The trick is to access the web version of WhatsApp through the browser of your PC or Mac.
Write in your usual browser the address https://web.whatsapp.com. With your mobile nearby, follow the instructions indicated. Click on ‘Menu> WhatsApp Web’. The camera mode of your phone will be activated. And after focusing on your PC’s browser, you will already have WhatsApp on your device.
Once the WhatsApp account is activated and synchronized in the browser, go back to the chat where the photo or video that was deleted is located to try to recover it. Click on it to try to download it again.
Finally, clarify that the multimedia files of video and photos, as well as the messages that you save in the backup copy of the WhatsApp application, will not be protected by end-to-end encryption as when they are stored in Google Drive.
Delete and start from scratch
Whenever you uninstall the WhatsApp application, or change your phone and reinstall WhatsApp, the service will offer you the possibility to restore your chats and multimedia files from a backup. You can also try this option.
Also, remember that whenever you are going to change mobile, it is advisable to previously access the ‘Settings’ of your WhatsApp and make a backup at this moment. In this way, when you enable the new one, you will get the last conversations.
